Massachusetts Electric Opens New Headquarters With Chamber After Hours

On Thursday, February 8, 2001, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Massachusetts Electric Company will host a Business After Hours at its new facility in Brockton. During the event, Massachusetts Electric Company will officially open its new $1.7 million South Shore Operating Area Headquarters located on the corner of Mulberry and East Ashland Streets. The facility, along with offices in Hanover, Nantucket, and Weymouth, will serve more than 200,000 electric customers in 22 Massachusetts communities.

Flanked by business and community leaders, Massachusetts Electric Company President and CEO Lawrence J. Reilly notes, "This new headquarters reflects Massachusetts Electric Company's commitment to providing the same reliable, high-quality, low-cost service that customers received from Eastern Edison before our companies merged in April." He added, "We also intend to continue the tradition of partnering with the local communities to help them thrive economically."

The single-story, 12,500 square-foot building, will house 54 employees who serve in Massachusetts Electric's local management, business services, engineering, and operations functions. An additional 98 employees already work at Massachusetts Electric's existing Mulberry Street facility, which is adjacent to the site of the new building. Massachusetts Electric currently employs 37 Brockton residents, some of whom will be assigned to the new facility. Reilly commented, "One of the key goals of the merger with Eastern Edison was to further reduce costs for the area's electric customers while increasing economies of scale to help improve existing high levels of service. This facility demonstrates that we can achieve both by investing in the newly merged company and the community."

The new Brockton facility will serve as the company's headquarters for its South Shore Operating Area, which includes the following communities: Abington, Avon, Bridgewater, Brockton, Cohasset, East Bridgewater, Easton, Halifax, Hanover, Hanson, Holbrook, Nantucket, Norwell, Pembroke, Quincy, Randolph, Rockland, Scituate, Stoughton, West Bridgewater, Weymouth, and Whitman.

Admission is free. Pre-registration is required. To register for this event, please call the Metro South Chamber at 508-586-0500 ext. 221.

Venture Forum Premieres February 1st at Stonehill College

The first monthly Southeastern Massachusetts Venture Forum will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2001, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the Martin Institute, Stonehill College's regional center for education, research, and public service. Unique to Southeastern Massachusetts, the Forum's purpose is to highlight regional entrepreneurs and growth company issues. As a result, the Forum is expected to increase the visibility of new venture opportunities for investors and other stakeholders, while strengthening and building an emerging entrepreneurial network in this region.

The Forum is being launched by the Southeastern Massachusetts Manufacturing Partnership, an industry-led, private non-profit corporation, in collaboration with NTB Associates, a Bridgewater marketing consulting firm. In addition to the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Stonehill College, charter sponsors include Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation, Bristol County Savings Bank, Karam Financial Group, Massachusetts Electric Company and NSTAR. Norm Brust, principal of NTB Associates is serving as Executive Director of the Forum. Among his other experiences, Mr. Brust is a past Chair of the WPI Venture Forum in Worcester.

The February 1st Forum will feature George Sanborn, Chairman and CEO of MIDAS Vision Systems, as keynote speaker. George will speak about entrepreneurial marketing including his experience as a founder of MIDAS, a venture capital-backed company in Wrentham, Massachusetts that provides proprietary vision-based inspection systems for manufacturers of high performance low-temperature co-fired ceramic components in the U.S. and abroad. Such electronic components are the backbone for a wide variety of products from cellular telephones and laptop computers to PDAs. MIDAS systems are deemed "mission critical" to manufacturing the new class of "BT" components currently being introduced globally.

MIDAS predecessor company began as a client of Crossroads Business Center, a private for-profit venture development center (commonly referred to as "incubators") operated by Mr. Sanborn. Under Mr. Sanborn's guidance and with the assistance of Crossroads, MIDAS has grown from 2 employees and a single patent in 1996 to a $25 million company with offices worldwide and over 65 employees. Its client base is composed of Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. and the equivalent in Europe and the Pacific Rim.

February's case study will focus on Heliotronics. Founded in April, 1998 as an engineering consulting firm, Heliotronics has evolved into a solar energy product and service company in response to market needs in the renewable energy industry. Heliotronics, Inc. specializes in innovative products that accelerate the adoption of grid connected photovoltaics. Clayton Handleman will present the firm's business plan and get input from a team of panelists and the audience.

During 2001, eight monthly Forum programs will be held. Each monthly program will have two elements: a presentation on a topic of interest to entrepreneurs, followed by a case study of an emerging company. The case study will include a review by a panel of three experts who will have the opportunity to review the formal business plan prior to the entrepreneur's presentation of the plan to the audience. Following the panel discussion the audience will have the opportunity to discuss issues related to the presentation.

Scheduled dates for 2001 are February 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, October 4, November 1 and December 6. There is a $10.00 registration fee. For more information or to get on the Forum mailing list, contact the Partnership at (508) 824-3600.

Conference/Sports Center Funds Approved for Metro South

Minor Baseball League Featured

Brockton and the Metro South region are one step closer to a regional conference/sports center. Mayor John T. Yunits Jr., along with the Mayors economic advisors and many state legislators, worked cooperatively with Governor A. Paul Cellucci to win funding for the project. The Governor recently announced preliminary approval of up to $6 million toward construction of the center. In addition, philanthropist Alfred Campanelli has committed $2 million dollars to build the facility which will adorn the Campanelli name. To get the ball rolling, Michael Hogan, Executive Director of MassDevelopment recently made available $75 thousand dollars in pre-development funds.

"The Mayor is to be congratulated for his leadership on this initiative. We are pleased to have been a part of this winning proposal. The entire region will benefit from a facility of this stature," said Lou Russo, Chair of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. "Early on, the Mayor requested the Chamber become active in its support for the center. In response, the Chamber has hosted meetings, met with prospective owners, provided regional demographic data, written follow up letters, passed a unanimous resolution and lobbied the Governor in this effort to establish this much needed facility," said Christopher Cooney, President and CEO of the Chamber.

The center will contain a sports museum, conference facilities to accommodate up to one thousand people, and a five thousand seat baseball stadium. A conference center and stadium of this nature fills a clearly established need and positions Brockton as a destination city for regional conferences and amateur sports events. "The Governor and his staff recognize the need for a facility of this type in Metro South and have acted decisively to make it a reality. The city and entire region will benefit through this venue that will provide community and economic development," said Ray Ledoux, Chair of Economic Development for the Chamber.

Mayor Yunits anticipates the first pitch will be thrown in summer of 2002.

MassDevelopment Expands Offices at Chamber

In September of 2000, Mary Waldron, former chief of staff to Mayor John T. Yunits Jr., accepted the position of Regional Manager with MassDevelopment. Shortly after her appointment, she established regional offices at the Metro South Chamber of Commerce to serve Southeastern Massachusetts. MassDevelopment provides funding for market analysis and architectural and engineering studies for proposed development projects. Since 1998, over fifty seven million dollars has been invested on eleven projects in Brockton.

On January 1, 2001 MassDevelopment expanded their presence in the region by leasing space for an additional three staff at the Chamber building on School Street in downtown Brockton. Joining Mary, is Larry Cameron who was hired as Business Development Manager and two additional staff who will be introduced in the February issue of the Chamber's Action Report. "We welcome the expanded support and assistance MassDevelopment provides through their commitment of additional staff to the Metro South Region. It is clear, they too, see the great development potential Brockton and the Metro South region represents. MassDevelopment is a great organization that has already had a tremendous impact on many important projects in our area, including the Multi- purpose Conference and Sports Center," said Christopher Cooney, President and CEO of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.

In response to the growing problem of bad checks and concern for the local economy, District Attorney Michael J. Sullivan has expanded the existing Bad Check Restitution Program to provide a greater scope of services to all victims of bad checks. The new program, available at no cost to businesses or taxpayers, will assist merchants in the recovery of their losses from worthless checks. Statutory fees paid by the bad check offenders fund the operating costs of the program making it virtually self-supporting. To successfully complete the program and avoid criminal prosecution, offenders must pay full restitution to the victim and attend an 8-hour intervention class. The curriculum is designed to help offenders recognize the root of their problem, take responsibility for their actions and, ultimately, stop writing bad checks. To learn more about the Bad Check Restitution Program, please contact Kimberly Sullivan, Community Relations Representative, at 508-746-0527.

Telephone: 508-580-4093

Year Established: 1973

Number of Employees: 20

Products or Services: We provide employment services to the business community. We offer individual employment, job placement services, job training, job matching, vocational training, permanent job placements, seasonal and part-time placements, creative staffing solutions and long-term commitments. Our Division of Employment Services has helped to place developmentally disabled adults in the workforce for the first time.

What is your market area? Our market area is primarily the South Shore and Metro South regions.

What markets do you serve? We serve the retail, service and manufacturing industries.

What is unique or special about your firm and the products and services you offer? We assist the business community in meeting their labor needs, while at the same time giving a chance to many people who have previously been excluded from the labor market. For many years job developers would knock on employers doors and ask for jobs. Employers would then attempt to tailor the individual to that job. This method gave little credence to proper job matching and usually ended up with a frustrated employee who did not last on the job. At GROW Associates, we have found that person-centered planning is the most successful means of ensuring quality placements. Person-centered planning is matching an individual to a job that they would enjoy doing then finding placement for them.

Please list awards, honors or special recognition: We have received Certification from the Department of Retardation.

What is your main business objective concerning your customers and the business community? Our goal is to place qualified applicants in a job they enjoy doing that is mutually beneficial to both the individual and the company.

A Member Profile will be featured in each issue of the Action Report. Members will be selected randomly from those in attendance at the monthly Good Morning Metro South breakfast. Attending a Good Morning Metro South is great exposure for your business.
