The next Southeastern Massachusetts Venture Forum will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2001, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the Martin Institute, Stonehill College's regional center for education, research, and public service. The Forum is managed by the Southeastern Massachusetts Manufacturing Partnership, an industry-led, private non-profit corporation, in collaboration with NTB Associates, a Bridgewater marketing consulting firm. In addition to the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Stonehill College, charter sponsors include Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation; Bristol County Savings Bank; D & D Web Works; Karam Financial Group; Massachusetts Electric; NSTAR; RCW Mirus Inc.; and Shapiro, Israel & Weiner.
Unique to Southeastern Massachusetts, the Forum's purpose is to highlight regional entrepreneurs and growth company issues. As a result, the Forum is expected to increase the visibility of new venture opportunities for investors and other stakeholders, while strengthening and building an emerging entrepreneurial network in this region.
The May 3rd Forum will feature Robert Romanow, cofounder of Frugal McDoogal's, as keynote speaker. Mr. Romanow will speak about "Partnering for Profit", including his experience in starting up a successful retail operation in Roxbury. Frugal McDoogal's mission statement focuses on giving a special quality of care and service long ignored in the inner city and providing jobs to residents, as well as creating business partnerships with area organizations. Mr. Romanow was also the founder of ADAP (since Auto Palace and Auto Zone) and the founder of various automotive part import companies, where he partnered with long-term employees. Additionally, in 1991, he cofounded the largest private child support company. His community involvement includes serving on numerous boards throughout the Boston area over the last three decades.
May's case study will focus on Paricon Technologies Corporation. Based in Fall River, MA, Paricon is a privately held manufacturer of a proprietary high density interconnection technology. PariPoser Technology enables a variety of high performance electronic subassemblies to perform functions that have not been possible with other available technology. Potential initial applications include high performance computer systems, medical prosthetics, military sensors, and handheld devices. At the Forum, company President Roger Weiss, Ph.D., will present Paricon's plans and get input regarding raising additional capital to continue the company's growth.
The May Forum is sponsored by Shapiro, Israel & Weiner, P.C. (SIW). Since 1969, SIW has built a reputation for personal service as well as innovative, effective representation in business law. The scale of SIW's practice assures timely and focused communications with their clients, along with a high degree of responsiveness to every need. Their range of expertise allows SIW to represent a diverse set of business clients, from start-ups to businesses of all sizes, and from individuals to major financial institutions.
Each monthly program will have two elements: a presentation on a topic of interest to entrepreneurs, followed by a case study of an emerging company.
There is a $10.00 registration fee. For more information or to get on the Forum mailing list, contact the Partnership at (508) 824-3600.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce
American businesses and workers achieved an enormous victory late last week when both houses of Congress voted to overturn the Clinton administration's ill-conceived, expensive, and unscientific ergonomics rule. The repeal will save businesses over $100 billion a year. President Bush is expected to sign the legislation into law.
Defeat of the ergonomics standard once again proves that when the business community speaks with a single voice and mobilizes its powerful grassroots network, there's very little we can’t accomplish on Capitol Hill.
The ergonomics rule, issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on November 14, 2000, and effective January 16, 2001, ignored legitimate scientific debate over the causes of musculoskeletal disorders, superseded state worker compensation laws, and was so broad it covered more than 100 million employees. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business groups lobbied heavily for repeal of the regulation. The Chamber filed a lawsuit in federal court on November 13, 2000, charging the ergo rule was incomprehensible, unsupported by evidence, and unconstitutional.
Late last week both houses of Congress passed a "Resolution of Disapproval" to overturn the standard under the 1996 Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to kill regulations within 60 legislative days of final issuance.
Along with the recent Supreme Court decision preventing the implementation of onerous clean air standards, defeat of the ergonomics rule is another important advance in the battle for common sense regulations and strong economic growth.

When you belong to the Metro South Chamber of Commerce, you are a leader within the business community and a member of the region's most dynamic business advocacy organization.
It was February 14, 1913, when a dozen local business people united to establish the Metro South Chamber of Commerce to display their pride, commitment, and enthusiasm for the community and region. They recognized what we still honor today. Collectively, businesses working through the Chamber of Commerce produce far more individual and community success than they do working alone.
Influence, perspective, resources, and results are multiplied through the leadership of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. The entire community benefits from the presence of a strong, effective Chamber.
On May 1, 2, and 3 many community and business leaders, currently benefiting from working through the Chamber, are contacting businesses that could benefit from membership in the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.
If you are not currently a Chamber member, take this opportunity to listen to someone who is working smarter through membership in the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. You’ll soon learn why so many businesses recognize Chamber membership as a key to their business and community success.
To learn more about displaying your community pride, enthusiasm, and commitment through Chamber membership, call Andrew Voght, membership services coordinator, at 508-586-0500 ext. 229.

On March 8, 2001 the Metro South Chamber of Commerce conducted a successful pollution prevention forum for the health care industry. The forum was sponsored by the Metro South Chamber of Commerce, the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce, the Plymouth County Development Council, the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell, and the Massachusetts Hospital Association. Over twenty-five representatives from local South Shore hospitals and health care facilities attended the forum held at the Chamber's headquarters.
The half-day forum covered specific pollution prevention strategies including employee safety, purchasing challenges, and waste reduction. The program also included a panel of experts from Caritas Good Samaritan and the Brockton VA Medical Center who shared their best practices and answered questions from the audience.
The Metro South Chamber would like to thank all representatives for attending and sharing their knowledge and ideas. A follow-up informal roundtable is being planned for April where participants can meet with their peers, discuss best practices and share information on environmental issues.
The forum was funded in part from a grant from the Toxics Use Reduction Institute at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Toxics Use Reduction Institute, established in 1989 by the Legislature to help implement the Toxic Use Reduction Act, is a multidisciplinary research, education, training, and technical support center. It promotes reduction in the use of toxic chemicals or the generation of toxic byproducts in industry and commerce in Massachusetts. The Institute works in conjunction with its sister agencies, the Department of Environmental Protection's Toxics Use Reduction program and the Office of Technical Assistance, part of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.
For further information on the roundtable, contact Roy Nascimento, Vice President-Public Affairs at 508-586-0500 ext. 225.

The Metro South Chamber has named Cheryl Showstack, The Enterprise, as its first Ambassador of the Quarter.
In 1997 Cheryl joined the staff of The Enterprise as coordinator for Newspaper in Education, a collaborative effort between schools, businesses, and newspapers to bring the newspaper into the classroom to be used as a "living text book." Presently, over 10,000 students are learning with over 200,000 copies of The Enterprise each year. To sustain this effort, Cheryl seeks funding from the community with each dollar being matched by The Enterprise. As additional benefits for teacher, Cheryl develops a monthly packet of educational resources and organizes periodic workshops.
Since joining the Ambassador Team in 1997, Cheryl has done an incredible job volunteering for and promoting the Chamber. For example, she attends our monthly networking events, helps increase membership and participates on the Taste of Metro South committee. Along with volunteering for the Chamber, Cheryl is actively involved with community organizations such as the Old Colony United Way and the Rotary Club of Brockton.
The Ambassador of the Quarter program highlights and rewards Ambassadors who go above and beyond in their duties as a member of the Ambassador Team. Each quarter, an outstanding Ambassador will be featured in the Action Report newsletter.
The Ambassador Team meets on a monthly basis to serve fellow members by providing information, resources, and member-to-member support, increasing awareness and promoting active participation in Chamber programs and services. To participate on this committee, please contact Andrew Voght, membership services coordinator, at 508-586-0500 ext. 229 or send an e-mail to info@metrosouthchamber.com.

What is Junior Achievement?
Junior Achievement (JA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing tomorrow's leaders by teaching kids how business works. Since 1919, JA's mission has been to ensure that every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. This is achieved by developing the desire in young people to stay in school and appreciate lifelong learning, by fostering positive attitudes toward work, and by creating a partnership that bridges the classroom and workplace.
Provided to schools at no charge, JA's sequential and integrated programs for students in grades K-12 utilize a unique delivery system that brings a volunteer role model into the classroom. The volunteer facilitates 5-8 sessions of instruction with the support of the regular classroom teacher using materials that are filled with lively hands-on activities. All lesson plans, support materials and training are provided by Junior Achievement. With local support, JA expects to reach and impact over 66,000 students this year.
Who Benefits?
Students - As determined by independent evaluators, JA
students demonstrate a significant understanding of
economics and business concepts - particularly those
who participated in programs at consecutive grade
levels.
Mentors - Volunteers serve as role models to help young people understand economic concepts in order to become successful in the workplace and in life.
Investors - Businesses, foundations and individuals support JA because it teaches students about economics and business and because JA's positive impact is measurable.
Educators - Teachers welcome JA's resources because they enhance the learning environment and reinforce the classroom curricula.
To learn more about JA in the Metro South area, contact: Patty Thompson, 781-544-3757, patty@ja-easternmass.org
