The Metro South Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the third annual ATHENA Award Program. The ATHENA Award, created for the Chamber of Commerce in Lansing, Michigan in 1982, has expanded to over 350 cities in the United States, Russia, and Canada. By honoring exceptional leaders, other will be encouraged to excel.

BAC to Benefit Business

On May 26, 1999, Congressmen Joseph Moakley and William Delahunt opened the Metro South Chamber Business Assistance Center (BAC) in cooperation with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.

The Metro South BAC, located at the Chamber's headquarters, Sixty School Street, Brockton, serves as a local one-stop business center of the SBA offering counseling and technical assistance to potential, existing, and expanding businesses. The BAC operates as a partnership among nearly twenty organizations involved in promoting the development of small business. The Metro South Business Assistance Center is one of the most successful satellite Business Assistance Centers opened by the U.S. Small Business Administration in Massachusetts. Since it opened its doors, the center has assisted over 800 clients with their efforts to start and build their businesses, and over 300 clients have participated in BAC sponsored workshops.

The SBA and Chamber recognizes Fleet Bank, Rockland Trust Company, Eastern Bank, Abington Savings Bank, People's Savings Bank, and The Community Bank for their community leadership and support of the Metro South Business Assistance Center.

Chamber Awarded National Workforce Development Grant

The Metro South Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board, the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, Massasoit Community College, and the Center for Workforce Preparation, announces its selection as one of six demonstration sites to conduct employer forums on workforce development issues, called Workforce Learning Academies. The Metro South Chamber of Commerce was selected from an applicant pool of over 70 chambers of commerce nationwide and was the only chamber selected from New England. Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Metro South Chamber will receive a grant of $25,000 from the U.S. Chamber's Center for Workforce Preparation.

"This award demonstrates the impact of the Metro South Chamber's commitment to nurturing commercial opportunity and the workforce which is its backbone," said Congressman William Delahunt. "The Chamber understands that our region's economic health depends on training and recruitment that benefits both employers and employees."

These Workforce Learning Academies will enable businesses, investment boards, service providers, and community leaders the unique opportunity to jointly address workforce development challenges. Issues to be addressed include recruitment, hiring, training and education, retention and advancement strategies.

"The Metro South Chamber of Commerce is committed to the betterment of our area businesses," said Christopher B. Cooney, President and CEO of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. "We are pleased to be partnering on this project with the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, Massasoit Community College, and the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board to address workforce development challenges and better equip our region to compete in the 21st century economy."

Sal Pina, Executive Director of the Brockton Regional Workforce Investment Board, stated, "The Workforce Investment Board is excited about the prospect of working with the Chamber on this project and finding solutions to our region's workforce challenges. The Board is proud to be a partner of the Metro South Chamber. To be one of only six chamber partnerships honored nationwide with this grant is quite an achievement."

"This workforce academies project has the potential to provide enormous savings to local employers," said Christine Karavites, Director of Education and Workforce Services for the Donahue Institute, the economic development arm of the University of Massachusetts Presidents Office. "We look forward to working with the Chamber and the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board on this exciting project. Southeastern Massachusetts
Venture Forum ~ June 7

The next Southeastern Massachusetts Venture Forum will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2001, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the Martin Institute; Stonehill College's regional center for education, research, and public service. The Southeastern Massachusetts Manufacturing Partnership, an industry-led, private non-profit corporation, in collaboration with NTB Associates, a Bridgewater marketing consulting firm, manages the Forum. In addition to the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Stonehill College, charter sponsors include Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation; Bristol County Savings Bank; D & D WebWorks; Karam Financial Group; Massachusetts Electric; NSTAR; RCW Mirus Inc. and Shapiro, Israel & Weiner.

Unique to Southeastern Massachusetts, the Forum's purpose is to highlight regional entrepreneurs and growth company issues. As a result, the Forum is expected to increase the visibility of new venture opportunities for investors and other stakeholders, while strengthening and building an emerging entrepreneurial network in this region.

The June 7th Forum will address Writing a Winning Business Plan. Business plans are a critical element in the success of any business. Writing the plan gives concrete form to an intangible desire, it forces management to systematically think ahead, it defines specific goals to be achieved and it provides measurement tools to determine how well you've done. If you are seeking financing, it is the sales document to attract a potential investor's interest. If it's an operational plan, it is a detailed description of what has to be done, who is responsible for doing it, how long it will take to do it and what resources it will take to do it.

The second half of the evening will be a case study of a real business plan that has been submitted for evaluation. Prior to the June meeting the business plan will be submitted to a panel of three experts for review. At the meeting the case study CEO will give the audience a brief presentation of the plan. Following the presentation, panelists will offer their detailed comments, suggestions and evaluation. Finally, there will be a Q&A session for the audience.

The June Forum is sponsored by Stonehill College near Boston in Easton MA. Stonehill is a private, four-year, coeducational liberal arts college in the Catholic tradition, located in the heart of Southeastern Massachusetts. There is a $10.00 registration fee. For more information, contact The Partnership at 508-824-3600 or www.semassventureforum.org.

Antonio Pires Elected President of Cape Verdean Association

Recently, Antonio Pires, owner of Pires Auto School, was elected president of the Cape Verdean Association of Brockton. During his twelve year tenure on the Association's Board of Directors, Antonio has served on several committees, including the school committee and presidential committee. As president, he hopes to see the Association grow by implementing more activities in the Brockton area. Antonio also serves on the Metro South Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors.

The Cape Verdean Association, under the name Cape Verdean American Association, was founded in 1977. In 1990 a second association, Allianca Caboverdiana, emerged. Later the tow organizations merged to become Associacao Caboverdiana De Brockton (Cape Verdean Association of Brockton.)

The Cape Verdean Association counts nearly thirty-percent of Brockton's population among its membership. In 1999 the Association established a permanent home in a renovated fire station located on Montello Street. The two-floor office building provides meeting space to accommodate the Association's extensive community offerings. That same year, the Metro South Chamber recognized the Association for its success and the significant positive economic impact of the Cape Verdean population on the region.

Presently, the non-profit organization has a sixteen-member Board of Directors, a staff consisting of three full-time and three part-time employees, and an operating budget of $200,000 per year. The Association hopes to continue working with youths and maintain its after school activities including dances, karate classes, and soccer tournaments.

W.B. Mason Eyes Expansion of Base in Brockton

W.B. Mason has proposed expansion to the former Bargaineer site off of East Battles Street in Brockton. The 103-year-old Brockton-based office supply company, which employs 700 people in six states, hopes to build an 85,000-square-foot showroom and distribution center on the property, said Tom Golden, president of the company's office furniture division. "We're looking to make a continuing commitment to the downtown Brockton area and the easiest way would be for us to keep a permanent distribution center within the city limits," Golden said. Golden said after razing the existing smoke stack and several standing outbuildings, the cleanup will total about $1 million. The company then would invest a minimum of $1 million in the new building.
