Senate President Travaglini Addresses Chamber Members

The New Senate President Robert Travaglini, marked his first visit to the City of Brockton and the region by speaking before the business community at the Chamber's Annual Legislative Breakfast on April 10 at the Massasoit Conference Center. The Senate President focused his remarks on the multi- year budget crisis that the state is facing. He was critical of Governor Romney's preliminary FY2004 budget and cautioned that the legislature will be making some difficult and painful budget decisions in the months to come.

Travaglini expressed support for small businesses, which he referred to as the "backbone of the economy", and for protecting the quality and affordability of education and health care in the Commonwealth.

The cost of health care was a recurring topic during the Q&A session, with many attendees focusing their questions on the dramatic annual increases to health insurance premiums for small businesses.

Over two hundred people attended the popular annual event. The Chamber would like to recognize and thank the following legislators and elected officials for attending and hearing from their many constituents in the small business community: Senator Jo Ann Sprague, Representative Christine Canavan, Representative Geraldine Creedon, Representative David Flynn, Representative William Galvin, Representative Louis Kafka, Representative Thomas Kennedy, Representative Kathleen Teahan, Representative Daniel Webster, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz, and Mayor John Yunits of the City of Brockton. Special thanks to Senator Robert Creedon and the many chamber volunteers for their assistance with organizing this event.

B-R School District Prepares Students for Future

Story Provided by Meghan Abella-Bowen

Making a decision about your career may seem like a long way off, but it's important to start thinking about it now. That is why the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District declared March 24-28, 2003 as Career Awareness Week for all students in the District. Career Awareness Week was designed as a way to create a focused one-week meaningful career awareness experience that builds upon the work being done through the school to career and tech prep initiatives. The goal of Career Awareness Week was to create opportunities in every classroom at every grade level for students to learn about careers, and the skills and education needed to obtain those careers.

By creating a district wide event, Bridgewater-Raynham was able to include over 6150 students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, in Career Awareness activities.

During the week-long event every teacher in the District was asked to integrate a career awareness activity into one of their regular lesson plans. Although, many teachers already incorporate some type of career activity in their lesson plans throughout the year, Career Awareness Week allowed the district to create a focused event for all students across the district. By asking every teacher in every subject area to participate in the event, students from art class to physics learned that what they are doing in the classroom, no matter the subject area, can play a role in helping them to prepare for future jobs and careers. This is an important point explains Larry Fisher, Bridgewater-Raynham's School to Career Coordinator, because it helps students see that what they are learning in school connects to the skills and competencies they will need as they enter into the real world.

Bridgewater Raynham teachers were encouraged to find creative and fun ways to integrate career awareness activities into their lesson plans.

Planning and implementing a one week district-wide Career Awareness Week is not a simple task, explains Fisher. For some of our teachers this may have been the first time they had incorporated career information into their lesson plans. We would like to commend our teachers for the great work they did integrating career awareness into their lesson plans. Through their work and the support of our administration, parents (many of whom participated as guest speakers), local businesses, and the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board's Youth Services Coordinator we were able to make our vision a reality.

If you would like more information on Bridgewater-Raynham's Career Awareness Week or would like to more information on how to become involved in School to Career Activities, please contact Meghan Abella-Bowen at the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board at 508-584-3234.

Tourism Forum at Fuller

What do North Adams, New Bedford, Lowell, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts have in common? They have all used the development of their cultural sectors to drive the economic recovery of their towns. The most famous case to date is the story of North Adams, the town that rebuilt its economy around the creation and launch of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMoCA). Fortunately, the entire process was documented in a film "Downside Up". The Fuller Museum of Art has invited the Massachusetts Cultural Council to screen that film at the museum on Wednesday, May 21st from 8:00 to 10:00 am. There will be a discussion period following the film during which we will explore what, if any, similar opportunities may exist for Brockton. Representatives from all segments of our community have been invited to provide the broadest perspective. Your attendance and input is requested and appreciated.

If you are able to attend, please contact Michael Darmody at the Fuller Museum (508) 588-6000 Ext. 120 or mdarmody@fullermuseum.org.
