ATHENA Award Presented on June 20 at Massasoit
Conference Center
Featured Speaker: Kathleen Doxer
Premier Sponsor: Bay State Gas Company
The Metro South Chamber of Commerce holds the third
annual ATHENA Award on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, from
7:30 to 9:00 a.m., at the Massasoit Conference Center.
The Chamber presents the ATHENA Award to an
exceptional individual who has achieved excellence in
his or her business or profession, has served the
community in a meaningful way, and has assisted women
in reaching their full leadership potential. The
ATHENA Award is presented in the form of a hand-cast
bronze sculpture, symbolizing the strength, courage
and wisdom of the recipient.
The featured speaker is Kathleen "Fannie" Doxer,
co-owner of Frugal Fannie's Fashion Warehouse.
Kathleen is the woman behind Frugal Fannie's. In 1983
she and her husband Orrin Doxer co-founded the
original weekend-only warehouse store in Westwood.
Now with eight locations in Boston, Washington D.C.,
and Philadelphia, Frugal Fannie's is a unique shopping
destination for thousands of admiring career women who
seek brand names and value in apparel.
Kathleen is the company's creative force, responsible
for image and advertising, which she produces
in-house. Self taught in business, Kathleen worked
her way off food stamps in the 1970s by becoming a
retail graphic artist while raising two young
daughters alone. In 1989, Kathleen created Frugal
Fannie's "Women Helping Women" program and has been a
leading sponsor of Rosie's Place, the first women's
shelter in America. Kathleen has been honored by
several organizations for her leadership and
philanthropy.
The ATHENA Award program sponsor is Bay State Gas.
Bay State Gas, located on Belmont Street in Brockton,
is an energy services company serving more than
300,000 customers in Maine, Massachusetts, and New
Hampshire. Pam Bellino, vice president of operational
services, Bay State Gas, will be interviewed during
the program.
As always, the Good Morning Metro South program
promises to be fast-paced, informational, and a great
networking opportunity. Guests are encouraged to stay
for informal networking immediately following the
program. Pre-register by faxing the back cover of the
Action Report to 508-587-1340 or calling 508-586-0500
ext. 221. The cost is $15/members and
$22/non-members.

New Environmental Insurance Incentives Program
Announced for Massachusetts Businesses
Bob Durand, Secretary of Environmental Affairs, and
four leading insurance companies recently announced a
new program aimed at rewarding sound environmental
management practices of companies through reduced
insurance costs.
Called the Environmental Insurance Incentives
Program, this first-of-its-kind initiative allows
participants that demonstrate a strong commitment to
environmental performance to qualify for special
policy incentives offered by participating providers,
such as lower policy premiums, lower deductibles or
extended lines of coverage.
The following insurance companies have agreed to
participate in this important new environmental
program: AIG Environmental, ECS, Inc., Kemper
Environmental Insurance, and Zurich, U.S.
"These companies should be recognized for
demonstrating tremendous leadership and foresight in
helping us offer this suite of incentives, which
recognize the importance and the cost effectiveness of
strong, effective environmental management practices,"
Secretary Durand said. "This program is an excellent
example of how the Commonwealth is seeking to create
voluntary, market-based incentives to reward superior
environmental performance."
"This program rewards our local companies for their
environmental initiative publicly and financially,"
said Christopher Cooney, president and CEO of the
Metro South Chamber of Commerce.
"We applaud this initiative by the Commonwealth to
recognize companies that demonstrate a strong
environmental ethic," added Dr. A. Wallace Hayes, VP,
Corporate Product Integrity of The Gillette Company.
The insurance benefits made available through the
Incentives Program are intended to both reward those
companies already committed to environmental
performance and encourage other Massachusetts
companies to make such a commitment - for example, by
implementing a sound, certified toxics use reduction
plan.
Participation by insurance providers in the program
is entirely voluntary, and is open to all interested
providers serving Massachusetts companies. To join the
program or to address any questions or comments,
insurance providers are encouraged to contact the
Office of Technical Assistance for Toxics Use
Reduction (OTA), which helped organize the initiative
in partnership with the Department of Environmental
Protection. OTA provides non-regulatory, one-on-one
assistance to Massachusetts companies seeking to
improve environmental performance and compliance. Paul
Richard, OTA Director, may be reached at 617-626-1042.
The Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction program has
encouraged significant pollution reductions since its
inception more than 10 years ago. The Incentives
Program is intended to reward those companies that
have helped Massachusetts achieve these environmental
gains, and encourage others to help further the
program.

Chamber and Fleet Salute Metro South Small Businesses
and Entrepreneurs at Awards Program
The Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Fleet Small
Business Services were pleased to recognize business
achievement with the presentation of the 2001
Entrepreneur and Small Business of the Year Awards on
May 22nd at the Massasoit Conference Center in
Brockton. Over ten years ago Fleet Bank joined forces
with the Chamber to develop this recognition program
and Fleet has been the sponsor of the awards program
ever since.
The Entrepreneur of the Year award recognizes
innovative individuals whose businesses have grown
through their commitment to their customers and their
community. The 2001 Entrepreneur of the Year Award
was presented to Randy Yanoff of Eye of the Tiger
Karate.
Randy, a Stoughton resident and Quinnipiac
College graduate, started Eye of the Tiger Karate on
the west side of Brockton in 1998. His unique
approach to business is to raise the success of the
community through the practice of karate. Randy is a
personal development specialist and karate is his tool
of choice. The benefits of his karate programs
include discipline, confidence, self-control, academic
achievement, goal setting, character development,
community service, and respect. Eye of the Tiger also
participates in community service projects through an
annual food drive and the annual "Adopt a Family"
project for Brockton Family and Community Resources.
Through his innovative thinking and
entrepreneurial spirit, Randy goes to great lengths to
ensure that every participant in his program is
satisfied; a quality that is to be celebrated in the
Metro South region.
The Small Business of the Year award recognizes
business leadership, which has fostered company growth
and created new jobs while contributing to the
community. The 2001 Small Business of the Year Award
was presented to Robert Sharkansky and Company, CPA.
Starting in Brockton as a one-man firm in 1963,
Sharkansky and Company has grown steadily over the
past 38 years into a full-service accounting and
consulting organization, offering all the services of
a "big five" firm, but with a warm, personal touch.
Focusing especially on assistance to owners of small
businesses and their families, Sharkansky and Company
has helped provide a roadmap to success for literally
scores of companies and individuals in the Metro South
region. Among its 700-plus business clients are
companies in retail, manufacturing, distribution,
construction, and transportation.
A dedicated, highly trained team of experienced
accountants and auditors perform the hands-on work
that make Sharkansky and Company a highly valued
"silent partner" in so many Metro South businesses.
"The awards program is a way for the Chamber and
Fleet Small Business Services to recognize people who
are devoting their time to growing a small business,"
said Christopher Cooney, president & chief executive
officer of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.
"Small businesses make up a majority of the businesses
in the region. Many of them begin locally, expand,
contribute positively to the economy and yet, go
unnoticed."
This is one of the Chamber's many programs and
services that is geared to the needs of smaller
businesses. The Metro South Chamber recognizes the
important role that small to middle sized businesses
play in our economy. The Chamber will continue to
offer services to meet their needs. The seventeen
candidates nominated this year were very strong and
the selection process was extremely difficult. Each
nominee was rated based on the following criteria:
number of employees; staying power; growth; social
responsibility; and innovation.
The Metro South Chamber of Commerce congratulates the
