Noelle Foye Receives ATHENA AwardThe ATHENA Award is presented to an exceptional individual who has achieved excellence in their business or profession, has served the community in a meaningful way, and has assisted women in reaching their full leadership potential. The Metro South Chamber of Commerce, John Hancock Financial Services, and Wal-Mart believe in the values underlying the ATHENA Foundation's philosophy of incorporating the talents and expertise of women into the leadership of our businesses, our communities, and our government. The spirit of the ATHENA Program is captured in a quotation from Plato, "What is honored in a country will be cultivated there." By honoring exceptional leaders, others will be encouraged to excel. The 2000 Athena Award Recipient is Noelle Foye. Noelle is one of the most senior School Nurses in the Brockton Public School system. She is currently assigned to the Huntington Elementary School. Noelle's primary community focus has been Girl Scouting, although she has also served as a CCD teacher at her church, on the board of Brockton Youth Soccer, as a member of both the Kennedy and Arnone Elementary Schools' Parent Advisory Councils, Goddard and Davis Kindergarten PCAs, as a Cub Scout Den Leader, and as a Boy Scout Troop Committee Member. Noelle's involvement with Girl Scouting has perhaps had the strongest influence on the greatest number of women in developing their independence, interdependence and self-confidence as they begin to make their place in this world in whatever way they choose. This year's distinguished group of ATHENA nominees include: Anne Beauregard, Massasoit Community College; Elaine Reiser, Brockton Area Multi-Services; Josephine Evans, Eco Fashions & Cellular; Noelle Foye, Brockton Public Schools; Joanne Hoops, Boys and Girls Club of Brockton; Margaret Downey, Crescent Credit Union; Kathleen Ramaci, Women of Wisdom; Adrian Tinsley, Bridgewater State College; Janice Johnson-Plumer, Southeastern Economic Development Corporation; Cheryl Showstack, The Enterprise; Marcia Bowles, Zawadi Cultural Service Center; Karen Iolli, Ailano School of Cosmetology; and Paula Bozoian, Stonehill College.

Intern Shares ExperienceBy Angela Whitford Graduating from college is a scary thing. Where are you going to work? When should you start looking for a job? Before you look for a job, you should be looking for an internship. An internship should be done your senior year, and don't forget you can always do a different internship each semester. Many students have an idea of what they want to do, but not exactly. I look at an internship as a job that you can "try before you buy." You can't just try a job for three months and then leave without any consequences. An internship allows you to find out for yourself what it would be like to work in your field. For example, you want to go into Public Relations and you get an internship at a Public Relations firm. During those three months you realize that you want to go into marketing instead. No harm done and now you have a better idea of what you want to do and where you may want to work. On top of that, the people you worked for in the Public Relations firm might be able to connect you to a marketing job in the future. Your first internship will be one of your first opportunities to create a network of people that can help you get a good job. Networking is everything. You might have heard the saying, "it's all who you know." That is one of the things I was concerned about when I was going into my senior year. I had no idea where I should do an internship. So, I went to one of my professors and told her what I wanted to do. She made a few phone calls in her network and found a perfect place for me to do an internship. I did my internship at the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. Working at the Metro South Chamber was a wonderful experience. At the Chamber, I learned how to act in the workplace, how to network, and many office skills. In addition, I met different, friendly people every day. I became part of the staff and each person on that staff prepared me for my future career in diverse ways. I never felt like I was just there to lick envelopes and do the work that no one else wanted to do. I felt like I belonged there and contributed to important projects just as much as any staff member. Months after my internship, I still feel like I made a difference and I helped them as much as they helped me. An internship at the Chamber is unique because of the resources available. You could talk to business people from almost every field and ask them what it was like to do their job. That is the closest thing to doing an internship in over fifty offices! I learned something from everyone I talked to and many have helped me in my career path. I highly recommend that every student does and internship, and an internship at the Metro South Chamber of Commerce is a great opportunity for students in any business or communication field. I learned just as much from my internship than I did from all of my classes combined. Angela interned at the Chamber for two semesters while receiving college credits and great experience. Upon graduation, she accepted a position with the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston.
