Chamber Holds Congressional Debate

On the evening of Tuesday, August 21, 2001, the seven Democratic candidates for the 9th Congressional District met at the John Joseph Moakley Center at Bridgewater State College to debate the issues at a forum sponsored by the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and co-sponsored by The Enterprise, The Patriot Ledger, and the Center for Legislative Studies at Bridgewater State College.

The debate was moderated by Lou Russo, Chair of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Government Affairs Manager for AT&T Broadband. Questions for the candidates were provided from a three-person panel comprised of David Connolly of The Enterprise, Neil Rothstein from The Patriot Ledger, and Dr. George Serra from the Center for Legislative Studies at Bridgewater State College.

Forums of this nature play an important role in the community, helping to inform the public and encouraging inclusion of all in the political process. The J. Joseph Moakley Center served as a fitting location for the debate. It is a tangible reminder of the legacy of Congressman Moakley which the candidates aspire to follow.

The debate will be aired via community access cable television by many of the communities in the congressional district.

Discover Junior Achievement

What is Junior Achievement?

Junior Achievement (JA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing tomorrow's leaders by teaching kids how business works. Since 1919, JA's mission has been to ensure that every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. This is achieved by developing the desire in young people to stay in school and appreciate lifelong learning, by fostering positive attitudes toward work, and by creating a partnership that bridges the classroom and workplace.

Provided to schools at no charge, JA's sequential and integrated programs for students in grades K-12 utilize a unique delivery system that brings a volunteer role model into the classroom. The volunteer facilitates 5-8 sessions of instruction with the support of the regular classroom teacher using materials that are filled with lively hands-on activities. All lesson plans, support materials and training are provided by Junior Achievement. With local support, JA expects to reach and impact over 66,000 students this year.

To learn more about JA in the Metro South area, contact: Liz Lane, Education Manager, 617-367-5850.

Workforce 2020 Academies Feature Futurist

The Workforce 2020 Initiative is a joint project of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce, the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board, the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Center for Workforce Preparation. Workforce 2020 was designed to work as an advocate for local companies to explore employment needs and concerns, inform businesses about current employment programs, and facilitate the process of finding solutions to the workforce challenges of tomorrow.

With the unemployment rate at an all time low, employers are scrambling to find new sources of employable workers. Similarly, area businesses are exploring innovative ways to retain the workers they already employ and train them so they have the skills the business will need to survive and prosper in the ever-changing global economy.

Through Workforce 2020 Learning Academies, businesses can access solutions to these critical challenges and learn about "best practices" in the area of workforce development. A nationally recognized faculty will present examples of real-world options that can be adapted to the Metro South region.

The Metro South Chamber will conduct two Workforce 2020 Learning Academies on Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14, at Stonehill College. The guest speaker will be Dr. Donald Jonas of the Hudson Institute, an internationally recognized public policy research organization that forecasts trends and develops solutions for governments, businesses, and the public. Dr. Jonas is co-author of Workforce 2020, the sequel to the Hudson Institute's Landmark Study Workforce 2000.

For more information or to register for a Workforce 2020 Learning Academy, contact Roy Nascimento at 508-586-0500 ext. 225. Space is limited.
